The Treasurer’s Report of May and June was approved as submitted, showing a balance of $19, 776.94. Committees: Strategic Planning Committee: Barb reported that Leslie Kennedy has been added to this committee and that she will also be serving. The goal has been to have the work completed by the Annual Meeting but the committee has had trouble getting started. Barb distributed materials that Bill Flournoy has brought in: “Developing Successful Organizational Leadership,” by William Hinman (5/17/03); “Measuring What Matters in Nonprofits,” by John Sawhill and David Williamson; and materials on the Land Trust Alliance Rally on October 16-19 in Sacramento, CA. Land Trust Committee: Bill reported there were no action items. He reported on an approach about land along the ATT in Wake. This has to mature, but it was discussed. He reported he expects to have information about the Morris tract by the next meeting. He reported on other tracts in various stages of preparation, including an old power plant site. Triangle Green Print Meeting: Don pointed out that he felt Bill Bussey’s e-mail had been diplomatic and that he felt the meeting may have been premature. Some persons were offended by a ranking of significance. National Trails Day suffered from rain. There were reports on various aspects of this and a suggestion that some of the work would be rescheduled to National Public Lands Day in the fall. Website: Reports on this were passed on from Dean Kanipe. Mike Cinoman has been getting inquiries about where our site is. Dean expects to have the site up in a few days. Don will send all old newsletters to Dean. Bill Flournoy reported on a contact by EcoAccess, which exists to put environmental information on the web. These people are considering putting trail maps on the web. They were seeking support for a grant but had a short turn-around. Bill gave out copies of his letter to Christian Stalberg (5/28/03), expressing confidence we could work cooperatively. Other matters discussed: Barb said the Executive Committee did not meet. Conference calls are still being studied. Bill Bussey will attend the meeting about a connection between the ATT and the New Hope Trail. Bill Bussey and Leslie spoke at the Wake Commissioners meeting on the ATT. Norm spoke of Edible Greenways, enhancing wildlife habitat. This is an interest of Partners for Environmental Justice. Bill Flournoy had written about that for People for Parks. Dan reported on Durham City’s construction at Stadium Drive and also in North Durham. He thinks there will be 14 miles of greenway by next year. He spoke also of stream restoration. Leslie announced that the southern end of the ATT (American Tobacco Trail) would be dedicated on August 23 at 10:00 a.m., and that David Price would be speaking. Bill Flournoy announced that Raleigh has just issued new bicycle maps. He will look into the Land Trust Alliance grants, which are due on September 5. Allen told of a new park and new trail in Franklinton. He also stated that he had found one Cigar Tree = catalpa on the first five mile of the ATT. Wendy discussed problems on Bolin Creek Trail in Chapel Hill, problems with crossing Estes Drive and Airport Road. Don said Orange County is pondering farmland easements. Barb discussed developments in Chatham, attending a Jordan Lake Trails Group meeting, and Bell’s Landing. She reported also that Weyerhauser is liquidating 8,000 acres in the area and this will go for auction in July. The meeting adjourned at 8:59 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Larkin Kirkman |
